Day 630

Costa Rica

Tom is slowly getting over his illness. He’s sticking to the BRAT diet (bananas, plain boiled rice, peeled apples and toast), though as we have no toaster he just eats plain white bread! I haven’t joined him and have tucked into some wonderful meals. Coffee is also off the menu for him which is a shame as Costa Rica serves up some stunningly good coffee. I had the best mug of coffee I’ve ever had. Everything about it was perfect. The strength, temperature, flavour. I could go on. I was tempted to just stop at this place, sell the bike, get a job, my journey done. Tom was having none of it, so off we went.

We camped in a small campground and were able to take advantage of our kit being safe and took a hike up to a view point overlooking the bay. We headed up through the rain forest on what was originally the driveway up to a house. Along the way there was a wall with stunning art work carved into it. The pictures were of the wildlife, fauna and history of Costa Rica. It went on for over a mile and though nature is slowly encouraging it was still fascinating to see. At the top we reached the view point. A near completed house, sadly never lived in. It’s walls now a canvas for some wonderful paintings, and what a house. Several levels, so many winding corridors leading to rooms overlooking the sea. Then as dusk fell we retraced our steps and the walk got even better. It appeared to be the time of day that the bird life, busy day of feeding done, stopped and sang. We could almost feel the noise as dear old Noddy once wisely sang!

Costa Rica is famous for it’s stunning beaches, deservedly so. The following night we wild camped under palm trees overlooking the beach. White faced monkeys greeted us. We had our bath in the sea, then ate tea watching the sun set. In the morning we ate breakfast as a pod of whales swam by. This was definitely a contender for a place in our Top 10 camp spots.

Back on the road we were surrounded the rain forest, the hills covered with mist. It was breath-taking, but also blisteringly hot. The Garmin informed us that by mid-afternoon it was mid-40s and so humid. Then the thunderstorms arrived. Though at times we struggled to see at least it was cooler! Costa Rica is a real joy.
