Day 1,700

Buenos Aires

We were somewhat disappointed to be here so soon, we had expected to suffer a bit to get here, but the road out of the second windiest town in the world was somewhat breezy and cycling just proved near impossible. So we flew and the bikes trotted along after us in a van. Due to the distance, it would take nearly a week for them to arrive so we booked a few days in an Airbnb.

For probably the first time of the trip we were in a major city, a capital no less, and Tom didn't have a film to do. The bikes weren't here so we couldn't work on them, just what would we do? Well we became proper tourists. We headed around a sculpture museum, a book shop set inside an old theatre, then we had a tour of the opera house, even sat in a private box but nobody sang.

Then it was what so many tourists do, we strolled. Through the Botanical Gardens, with trees from around the world, and an area just full of birds, we had our closest encounter of the trip with a humming bird. We spent an evening sat in a nearby park watching locals tango the night away. It was enchanting. People just popped along, sometimes with a dancing partner sometimes without. But everybody danced. The old guys were definitely the partners of choice, their lifetime of skills much more attractive than the young bloods. Around us were magnificent trees, fig trees so old and large they needed stakes to help them stand up. It brought home again how different life is when you know that not only will the evenings be warm but the temperature will be so much better than during the heat of the day. We fell in love with Argentina all over again.

Our bikes arrived early, but we discovered I had a tiny broken piece needed to attach my carrier to the frame. Unfortunately Buenos Aires’ main shops shut for a few days due to a carnival. We booked an extra night, and today a bike shop and a motorbike shop came to our rescue and both refused payment. So our time here is over, our plans are to ride to Iguazu Falls via Uruguay and a very big hil, but we're having second thoughts. We will update soon!
